BillGuard can now alert you when your card is used away from your location in a manner that suggests a fraudulent charge.
How does it work?
When you install BillGuard with location-tracking, the app starts monitoring your phone’s location and tries to match where you’ve been with where your card was used. When a match can’t be made – and our system doesn’t believe it’s a legitimate remote payment – you’ll get an alert.
They usually can’t. While your bank can alert you when your card is used abroad, it usually won’t notify you about purchases in the same state or country you’ve made previous purchases. Your card issuer only sees where you’ve used your card, not where you are, so if your card was skimmed at an ATM or gas station and then used across the street, your bank has no idea that you’re not there anymore.
Will it affect my phone’s battery life?
Very little. BillGuard uses state of the art technology, custom built for fraud detection. We only sample your rough position when you’ve reached a new location, so we may note your location as few as 2-3 times a day. In most cases we’re able to do this without even activating your phone’s GPS. This is a much lower level of location monitoring than activity monitoring apps that measure your movements continuously.
What about my privacy?
Just like your transaction data, we will only use your location to provide you the BillGuard service. Your data is completely private and secure. We will never share your personal data with anyone. Period.
What about purchases I make online? I don’t want alerts from those.
Don’t worry! BillGuard is smart enough to detect most legitimate “card-not-present” transactions, including online, phone and recurring purchases.
Why aren’t locations appearing for my transactions?
Some cards lack metadata necessary to show transaction locations.
Can you guarantee that you’ll identify all fraud on my card?
Nope, and anyone who promises you that is a sham. The only way to catch all fraud on your card is to check each and every transaction diligently. BillGuard is the best tool to help you do that, and our fraud detection features are there to highlight transactions that are more likely than others to be problematic.
How do I turn this off?
If you’d prefer not to receive location-based fraud alerts, tap on ‘Settings’ and switch ‘Location Monitoring’ to ‘Off’.
How do I edit transactions on Android?
